Start A Photography Business The Smart Way Key #1 – Pricing

Whether you’re starting a photography business from scratch – or wanting to discover how to improve the profitability of a photography business you already have, you will find the tips revealed in this article, and subsequent articles, very valuable – I sure have.

You see, starting a photography business is like starting your car – if you have the “keys” it’s a whole lot easier and faster than if you don’t have the keys.

There are 3 major keys to starting your photography business (or improving the one you already have) . Let’s talk about the first “key” in this article.

Starting a photography business Key #1: Smart Pricing Skills –

Here’s 5 secrets regarding your pricing that will make you a lot of money with your photography business:

1. Decide NOT to keep your prices really low – it’s just not necessary. If you keep your prices low – you won’t make hardly any money, and you’ll be gone before you even got started. If people are not hiring you right now – it’s NOT because your prices are too high. Not a chance. It’s because your marketing is not effective and you can’t sell effectively.

2. The actual prices aren’t anywhere near as important as the WAY you merchandise them. For example – I have discovered that packages (or “collections”) almost always outsell a-la-carte pricing – so offer packages. This makes the decisions much easier for your clients and prospects. (I suggest you also offer a-la-carte pricing, too, so you can use this to your advantage – see #3 below.)

3. Always state how much your clients will save by choosing a certain package over investing in individual images one at a time. So you set your a-la-carte prices substantially high – fair – but high. Then you put together packages or “collections” which will give your clients a great savings over what it would have cost them if they had invested in the same sizes from your a-la-carte menu.

4. Never put your prices on your website. It’s one of the most common mistakes photographers make. It totally screws up your business. Why? Because the number one reason people call you is to find out the price. If you give that to them on your site, there’s no reason to call you, and you will never have the chance to build trust and a relationship with them, and then book them.

5. Raise your prices twice a year – no matter what. I call this “Auto-Pilot Pricing” and it’s amazingly effective. Twice a year, you raise your fees between 10% and 20% each time. This is not much of an increase. But, as you do this twice a year, it really adds up, and before you know it, you’re fees are very substantial.

So there you have it – 5 powerful tips regarding the pricing of your photography services – whether you are just starting a photography business, or you already have a photography business and want to earn a better living with it.

The Changing Styles Of Food Photography

Our appetites have changed over the years and no more is this clearly reflected than in food photography. The rise of organic, real food combined with a focus on healthier diets over the last decade has seen a major change in how food is presented through photography.

No longer are we quite as tempted by a plate of perfect looking, vividly coloured food rested neatly on a table. These days, food photographers set out to capture societys ever-changing tastes by keeping it real in other words – messy is in. Think of a slice of chocolate cake with icing oozing off the side, or a succulent steak with pepper sauce splashed almost carelessly about the plate. Today, this is how we like to see our food presented. This messy approach to food photography is now the favoured style for many in the food business.

If you look through a recent cook book or check out some recipe websites, then the chances are youre more likely to see this rather modern style of food photography, and its not just about being messy. Food photographers are more likely to use natural light instead of artificial studio lights and less props to keep the shot looking clean, simple and giving more focus to the food. Food photographers will also often use different effects such as extreme close ups and unusual angles to make the food appear more visually appealing.

However another style of food photography has emerged in recent years. Referred to playfully as food porn, the food photographer will style the food in a provocative almost sensuous manner to get the customers appetite truly whetted. Often this food styling is used to shoot exotic or rather indulgent dishes usually packed full of calories. This style is useful when marketing unhealthy food as it can be promoted as an indulgent treat, rather than trying to pretend to the ever-discerning public that it offers any nutritional value. The term food porn was first coined by feminist writer Rosalind Coward back in 1984 and has now become one of the buzz words for foodies everywhere.

Of course, the styles of messy food photography and food porn havent quite reached fast food restaurants. Pictures of perfect hamburgers and long straight fries still seem to adorn the menus and its advertisements. Most people arent going to head to your average fast food restaurant for an organic, natural meal – so messy food photography is deemed not as relevant in this environment.

Whatever is next for food photography, the one thing that will never change is its overall aim to sell to customers – and this takes real skill. The food photographer needs to visually convey not just the attractive appearance of the food, but also its aromas, taste and texture. This is not easy when you consider you cant actually touch, sample or smell the food from a photograph. However, if the image successfully captures all these elements, then this makes the food much more appetising to customers, in turn increasing their propensity to buy – and that can only be good for the food industry.

Construction photography uses of photography in real estate

What is construction photography? Is it just taking pictures of the real estate projects or is it something different? It is different. It is not regular photos of a hotel or resort. In this style, pictures are taken from a height like 2000 feet above the ground level. Of course, the cameraman rides an aircraft to achieve that height.Real estate projects seen from the above fulfill a purpose that is keeping a close eye on the developments. Considering the number of men and machines involved in completing a project, it is mandatory for the developer to keep a close watch to determine the speed of development. The developer can view the entire project from a height. He can see the number of men and machines working at any given time. The developer can get the aerial pictures clicked from a professional cameraman.

Construction photography is an ideal way to keep an eye over the ongoing development work. Images taken in intervals can show the milestones achieved in a given period. Such images can be used in yearly reports, business presentations and to satisfy the investors. The images would help the developer determine how many men and machines are actually working, whether building material creating obstructions and are the vehicles parked at right place.Aerial pictures can be used to locate a specific machine or an important part of the project. For instance take surrounding garden. The pictures would show how the garden is maintained and whether it needs improvement or not. Similarly the pictures can be used to keep track of movement of building material so that nothing goes waste or lost.

Tons of building material is supplied to a big real estate project site and it is learnt that a lot of material goes waste due to strange reasons. Construction photography can locate the lost material on the site. In reality trucks carrying the material unload the material wherever they find space. In this way it becomes difficult for the contractors to keep track of the full material. But with aerial pictures they can find a convenient place for unloading expensive building material.Construction photography is an expensive art but it saves developers thousands of dollars and also helps them promote their projects. The pictures are taken at a set time and the photographer uses closes airport for riding an aircraft. This photography is taken as part of the real estate project.

Wedding Photography Styles Defined

Choosing a wedding photographer can be a difficult process especially if you don’t know what to look for. With so many different photography styles to choose from, it is important to figure out what type you prefer. Some of the names for these include the following: Photojournalism, Traditional, Documentary, Illustrative, Contemporary, Reportage, Candid, and many others. However, when shopping for a City Hall Wedding Photographer you cannot assume that the name fits the actual work. The only way to figure this out is to research each website and look at the photos. I will attempt to provide a very brief summary of the 4 major styles that are most prevalent:

PHOTOJOURNALISM A documentary approach to wedding photography that emphasizes candid photos with little or no posing. Also known as Reportage, Documentary or Candid wedding photography. The final wedding album should tell the story of the day in an artistic fashion. Hopefully, a true photojournalist will capture emotion, laughter and the fun present at virtually all weddings. Photojournalists will interact much less with the bride and groom throughout the day and will usually take less of the couple’s time.

TRADITIONAL Traditional photographers like to call their style “timeless”. Some will work off of a so-called “shot list” that the bride and groom are asked to complete before the wedding. They will use classic, romantic poses and there is more emphasis on capturing the family and friends in posed photographs. Much more interaction with the bride and groom is present and it may take more of the couple’s time to complete the shoot. An excellent traditional wedding photographer should be an expert in lighting, posing and family portraits.

ILLUSTRATIVE Illustrative photography may be one of the newer style designations, but it has been around for quite a while. It’s not exactly a mixture of photojournalism and traditional photography but it does contain some elements of both. An illustrative photographer will try to shoot a wedding in a documentary fashion, but will improve the circumstances where possible. This may include choosing a great outdoor background to shoot the couple in front of, or changing the lighting indoors to improve the end result. One example of illustrative wedding photography involves the photographer asking the bride to get dressed and put on her jewelry, etc. close to an open window with natural light available. In theory, this should improve the photos, by providing complimentary lighting.

CONTEMPORARY Contemporary photography is one of the more recent styles that has emerged in the last few years. The focus here is on creating high-fashion types of images. Striking poses, glamorous make-up and edgy backgrounds are all part of Contemporary wedding photography. The photographer will bring in studio lighting or maybe even backdrops to create images with impact. A very hands-on approach is taken with both the bride and groom. You will be instructed to make very deliberate poses, the types you may see in publications like Vogue. At times, you will feel like a model does during a magazine cover shoot. This style is probably not for the shy, reserved bride, though some of the best at this art would tell you that they are able to make anyone feel comfortable in front of the camera. In many cases, that is probably true, but it becomes increasingly important who you choose. This type of coverage can be just as time consuming as Traditional wedding photography, but the results can be spectacular. The fact is, most wedding photographers probably won’t fit neatly into one of these categories. However, a very large majority of them will tell you that they incorporate all these styles into their work. Of course, the true test is the actual photos. Ask the photographer how they fit into the categories above, but most importantly, look at the work!

Pregnancy Portraits – Getting Professional Maternity Photography

Over the past ten years, maternity photography has become very popular. The anticipated birth of each child into the family is being celebrated with a professional photography session to capture the time in the family’s life. When considering getting pregnancy portraits done, there are some key elements to think about, including when to have the maternity session, who should be in it, and what to wear.

The timing of the maternity session is very important. You do not want to do the session too early and not have an impressive belly, but you do not want to wait so late so that the woman is swollen in the feet and ankles and miserable. Given these parameters, 32 to 36 weeks is a good, happy medium that usually works well. Of course if the woman is having multiples, then adjust the time accordingly.

Another consideration is who will be in the photos? Obviously the pregnant woman will be in them, but who else should be in them? One approach is to include the family members that will be the most significant part of the baby’s life – which usually includes both parents and any siblings. A different approach would be to do the project as a study of just the woman and her pregnancy – which is then sometimes given as a gift to her partner as a surprise.

Where should the maternity session be done? Most maternity sessions involve showing a good deal of skin, so the woman should consider whether she would be comfortable doing that in public space like the beach or a meadow or a more edgey urban city look, or whether she would prefer the privacy of a photography studio or home session.

The desired style of the resulting images should also be carefully considered. Should they be more moody and shadowy, or light and airy, more traditional, or sexy, or fun and funky? Figuring out the style or styles of the pregnancy portraits can be done by looking on the internet for examples of other maternity photography that you like.

After having figured out the location and the styles, figuring out what to wear should be a bit easier now. For maternity sessions, the choice of what to wear includes; wearing clothes with the belly showing, doing semi-nudes with clothing, bathing suits or lingerie, doing semi-nudes with fabrics and sheers, or full nude maternity photography.

After having decided to do the session, another thing to think about is where to put the resulting prints from the session. If they are family portraits that are clothed, they may be able to hang anywhere in the house. If they are more black&white nude pregnancy portraits it may be better to hang these in the bedroom. Another great choice is to consider a fine art maternity album for the images.

After having done the professional maternity session, adding an artistic newborn photography session would be an excellent idea. Framed body parts from the maternity session including close ups of hands and bellies can be combined into a modern wall collage with close-ups of baby feet, hands and face. Creating an album from the pregnancy portraits and newborn portraits is another wonderful way to celebrate the new life in your family.

Art Photography Shows Wonderful Images

Photography is a build and an art. The actual photographer has to have an enthusiastic knowledge of cameras, illumination and film. The great photography enthusiasts also have an artistic sense, and they capture images that have an psychological impact on the viewers. These photographers produce art photography that compares to the truly amazing images created as paintings with oils on fabric. The work that is considered to be art photography sells at high prices in high quality galleries around the world. A few of the images that are regarded as art photography are well known images admired by lots of people.

Art photography includes person images of stunning subjects and the prints of those photographs. There are museums around the world that exhibit art photography on a permanent basis, and there are sites that exhibit great art photography on a revolving basis. The art photography collection by Eugene Smith is kept on a permanent basis at the College of Arizona where enthusiasts come to view this particular magnificent work. Smith willed his art photography to this university, and the selection is an invaluable asset for this university. Other great photographers have made similar gifts to other institutions. Eugene Smith sacrificed a lot for his art throughout his lifetime, and this excellent artist died poor aside from the valuable art pictures now on display only at that university.

Books of Fine art Photography Hold Magnificent as well as Diverse Images

There are several photographers who are famous for his or her art photography. These include Eugene Smith, Ansel Adams, Margaret Bourke-White as well as Richard Avedon. Although these types of photographers are great designers, their subjects differ significantly. This great photographer used an exceptionally big camera to make their dramatic pictures. Margaret Bourke-White was a journalist who covered some of the most frightening battles of World War II. Rich Avedon was a fashion photographer who showed beautiful people in exquisite clothing.

The photographs of the excellent artists are usually obtainable in books and museums. These great artists have also supplied commentary on their lives and their skills as photographers. Commercial Photography – Shooting For Magazines

Digital photography has caused a massive surge in the popularity of this once mysterious art. Secrets of the darkroom, once accessible only through years of study and practice, are now widely available in digital photo editing suites. Film which would cost a professional photographer hundreds of dollars over time has been replaced by memory cards with infinite re-shoot possibilities, and the low cost of entry for digital has allowed thousands of new users to jump into the fray with minimal financial risk. With so many new photographers in the profession, it has helped expand the market for both publications and photography opportunities and created new sources of images and places to sell them. But as a new photographer it may seem challenging to get started so let’s take a look at the world of magazine photography.

What Do Magazines Want?

Sure, there are plenty of magazines out there that deal primarily in celebrity gossip or trendy news. Since its not likely you will be booking Brad Pitt into your studio (or sneaking around outside his house), its important to remember that there are thousands of magazines out there that are all dedicated to pretty much everything else. There are magazines on cars, dogs, computers, fitness, home decor, cooking and so many others. These magazines are always on the market for relevant and useful images that fit their niche.

One way to think about it is that these magazines will always need images of their topics and are happy to pay for them. For example, dog magazines, will never stop needing dog photos so why not focus on a specific niche?

How Do I Get Started?

First, you should look for a niche that you find interesting. Whatever topic you love, chances are good that there is a magazine focused on that particular subject. Once youve decided on a market, swing by your local bookstore and grab a few magazines off the rack. Take a look at the kinds of photos they are using, and ask yourself if these are the kinds of photographs that you will enjoy taking. Its also important to be honest with yourself at this step can you deliver photographs that are at or above the quality of the photos theyre using? If not, work on your photography until you can.

Once you’re ready, look through each magazine and find the photo editor or information on how to submit photos. You want to make sure that you understand the magazine’s guidelines before you start otherwise your pictures will likely not be accepted. Once you know where and how to send your photo, send it in. Its always good to accompany the photo with a brief note this is a good place to link your portfolio.

The Waiting Game

Anytime you submit a photo to a magazine, plan to wait several weeks for a response. Magazines are a print media, and even if accepted your photographs will not show up for a few months. Additionally, its always best to only submit each photo to one publication at a time, this way you dont run the risk of having to decline an offer because another editor has chosen to use your image.

Many times, magazine will note their usual response time to be between 2-8 weeks. If you havent heard anything after this time has expired its okay to send a follow-up note reminding the editor of your submission. Just keep it polite!

What’s so surprising about selling pictures to magazines is that the process is so easy. It can be summed up in its entirety by find it, shoot it, mail it. Selling your photographs to a magazine may sound like a crazy idea, but once you get started making submissions, you’ll wish you would have started doing it sooner!
